A Valuable Insight into the World of 381 AD

This book not only provides a translation of the surviving reports by Egeria of her travels to her fellow nuns at home in Spain but contains a commentary on the context of her travels, other contempraneous sources and an analysis of her descriptions both of the lands visited and on her accounts of contemporaneous liturgy. Egeria travelled to the Holy Land and Egypt from about 381 to 384 AD. Her accounts are a welcome antidote to modern "scholarship" suggesting that the New Testament statements of fact and the location of events are somehow recent inventions. There are also surprises. Egeria relates as if it were commonplace that she was escorted at times by detachments of the Roman Army. She also describes a liturgy of mind=blowing length and complexity but which still resonates with the modern Catholic litiurgy.

Surprising Find!

During my research on the Christian sites of the Holy Land, the name "Egeria" surfaced. I located this book on Amazon and when it arrived, I found it to have a wealth of information. This pilgrim kept a detailed diary which she sent to her "Sisters." She is very specific about the sites and liturgies of the Holy Land. Any one looking to learn more about the spiritual devotion in the Holy Land will enjoy this book. Since her diaries were lost, this partial account is all that exists and it is fascinating to read. Further research links her to St. Sylvia.

Featuring a tour-de-force introduction and extensive explanatory notes, this is the first edition of the work to appear since its original publication in 1949.

Increasingly after the war, H.D. sought new forms of writing to express her persistent interests in the politics of gender and in issues of nationhood and home. This would be a great introduction to a survey of troubadour writing

A book in two parts: first, a semi-long poem called "Claribel" that gives an imaginary context to the female character who gets all but one offhand mention in The Tempest - as a daughter who's sole role was a gift to a foreign king. Helda gives her a purpose, a story, and dares to glance at the thoughts or inspiration behind her the writer who invented her.

Then, "Claribel" suddenly ends and an exploratory essay about pre-, post- and Elizabethan drama and poetry begins. The essay is informative, but it is also creative - by giving relational info about Ben Johnson, Christopher Marlowe, John Ford, George Herbert, Shakespeare, John Fletcher, Michael Drayton and many more. She quotes the stronger points of each, points out flaws as well as merits, and once again, dares to contextualize Shakespeare, give him the body that no informative biography really can.

This would be a great introduction to a survey of troubadour writing, a companion piece to Eliot's essays about Elizabethan drama, and just for "Claribel" alone. I always found H.D. a little hard to penetrate, but there is a softness and imaginative quality (and a little more daring) than the imagist/Pound-like poems that are in the New Directions selected.

Good as primer or reference

Most marketing textbooks tend to be thematic, flashy, cluttered with "examples," and to a certain extent, they tend to extol the virtues of marketing.
Not this book.
Sanhusen gives a detailed, comprehensive review of the information presented in an introductory marketing class, in a format that can serve both as a primer and a reference. By omitting long explanations and numerous examples to illustrate a single point, this book presents the information in a straight forward, no nonsense manner.
A fictitious company is presented in the first chapter, and it is used to reinforce key points in subsequent chapters. Other examples are not overtly woven into the fabric of the text, but discrete sections. If you are cramming for an exam, you can skip over them without the fear of missing any critical information.
Compared to the other marketing texts I have read, this is by far the best, and would make an excellent resource for preparing for the CLEP marketing exam or as a supplement to a college text.

Marketing Mix - Missing the flow...

I sat for the Principle's of Marketing CLEP today, and passed with a low 70's score.

I used this text exclusively for studying combined with the instantcert online test questions.

I knew nothing about marketing 7 days ago. After reading the book in 3 days and 1 day of practicing tests online, I was ready for the test and passed easily.

My only complaint regarding the book is that it didn't 'flow' very well for me. All of the concepts and details were there, but I found it difficult to digest.

I prefer the style of the Barron's Management book which was easy to read (cover to cover) like a normal book, not a jumble of concepts and details (and false case study).

In any case, it worked for me, and would recommend the book as a great CLEP test prep.

Overall the Barron's Business Review series is excellent and I have purchased them all to help with CLEP and to use for future reference.
