Love, Life & Destiny, by Christopher Guy Luke

Love, Life & Destiny is the story of how fate, destiny and karma propels one man half way across the world after a major life defining event, a tragedy so deep that causes him to question everything about his life.

The modern materialistic man who only believed in one thing - money - lost the only person who meant anything to him. This catastrophic event caused him to reflect on the usefulness and purpose of his life, embodied in the question 'Who Am I?', to such a degree that he questioned everything even the continuation of his life.

With this one clear question in the forefront of his unfettered consciousness, he embarks on a voyage of discovery which takes him from Nottingham, England across India and Thailand. His guide became the power of synchronicity as situations, people and events offered up an alternative, and radically different, view of our physical existence.

This is a powerful story of self discovery and enlightenment providing confirmation that we are more than just physical beings, living in a material world. His conclusion is that there is an unseen force that guides and communicates with us through our intuition and our lives are shaped and lived in a way that may surprise us. Fate and Destiny do exist but we are so often blind to what is going on round us that we often miss clear signals about our true pathway.

As one reviewer on Amazon Kindle observes:

"A beautifully written book about the author's personal journey towards discovering who he is and what purpose his life has. This is a must-read for anyone who has ever questioned their beliefs or who has wondered about fate or coincidences.
This book shows the reader that there are no coincidences in life, only a series of happenings that light the way forward.
It will make you smile, cry and look at your own life and how you have got to the point in life you are at now.
Loved this book!"

An Inspiring and Engaging Story
By Catherine Clowes
Christopher Luke tells us his incredible story of one life that took a drastic turn into the unknown. This is a tale about following inner longings and dreams to change life circumstances that many of us think about, but never have the courage to take action on. Fascinating observations on the cultures of India and Thailand and how those cultures compare to those of "The West." Throughout the book there runs heartfelt personal assessment and subsequent enlightenment that inspires the reader to do the same. Besides all that, it is a rollicking good read, with moments of both pure heartache and absolute hilarity that will take you on an adventure you won't want to leave!

On The Path: Love Life and Destiny by Christopher Guy Luke
By Jan O.
Love, Life and Destiny
by
Christopher Guy Luke

Luke's book is a spiritual memoir. He shares a part of his later life and travels and the spiritual struggles he experienced along the way. An avowed skeptic about anything beyond what he could see for himself, he was not a religious person nor did he have any kind of spiritual context. He was intuitive since childhood but had tamped that down - after all, what good was it? Luke was a material guy and believed in business and making money as the only road to self-realisation. That was all there was. His focus was, he tells us, on this more than anything, so it does not surprise the reader to discover the losses on his balance sheet: wives and children. He didn't succeed as a family man. However he made it big as a business consultant. It was all about money, and money he had. End of story? Not.

Luke tells of meeting his last wife, the true love of his life and also he believes his soul mate. He notices some amazing coincidences/commonalities between them including the fact that she lived next to what had been his grandparents home in another city, and that they'd actually encountered each other as children, which she told him. He blew that off, he didn't remember it until much later when he found an old photograph of himself as a child on the beach....next to his future wife and her family. Oddities like this came to intrigue him, and Luke became a believer in synchronicity, or the Jungian idea that some connections are more than coincidence if we just "connect the dots." (This analogy is from the remarks of the late Steve Jobs, and Luke comes back to it often as an illustration. He sees synchronicity as a way to intuit deeper meaning in life and to tap into spiritual reality.

After a few bliss-filled years with his beloved, she died of cancer, leaving him grief-stricken, empty, and yearning for answers. He began a spiritual and actual journey, traveling to India and other parts of Asia where he tried to put business together as well as a spiritual understanding. Neither came easily. At the same time he neglected his material interests in the UK over the years (one wonders why he didn't just sell his property first) to the point of indebtedness and lost everything he had there. As he advanced along his spiritual highway, his monetary path, to which he had paid so much attention all his life, suffered. He ends the book with nothing material: an empty wallet, but a great deal of spiritual insight, which he shares as he offers his story.

This is a classic tale, rather like the mythic or folk tale quest narratives in fiction which reflect humanity's universal dilemmas. Many indiviuals don't think much about spiritual matters until they run into trouble....a loved one dies or is in the hospital, or perhaps the person himself. "What do I do?" "Why is this happening to me?" are usually the first questions. This is often the point of departure on the road to struggling with why bad things happen to good people; whether God is involved and if so, how; and general study and struggle to find equilibrium again often follow. Life is never the same but the search leads one to one's own answers.

Luke's story sheds light upon one man's search for meaning. It's fascinating reading in some ways, set as it is in exotic Asia and liberally sprinkled with customs and ideas from India and elsewhere. Luke doesn't give the reader the answer sheet (and I would like the book much less if he did!) but the all the test questions are there, encouraging the reader to look inward and ask his own.

The book could have been better edited and the composition/language more finely honed, issues on which the author is currently working. But the message was the point for Luke, and that he did admirably. He shares how things spiritual virtually smacked him in the face and how he never got the message until much later....many readers will relate to that! I recommend the book as a brief, fascinating story not only about an individual life but about life's spiritual meaning and one man's discoveries on his path.

Very poor / big let down.
By Tracey Ashworth
I was actually looking forward to reading this ebook, having 'watched' the build up on the author's various Facebook pages. Positives first, it's not too long, an easy read and if you like soap operas, well that sets the tone. There are, sadly, far more negatives though. The main problem is there is simply no substance. The book is really an extended 'diary' which might be interesting if you actually know the author personally but otherwise it really is like reading a diary. There is non of the 'insight' I was expecting. You get the impression that despite his protestations otherwise the author really just wants attention so 'let's talk about me'. This would be fine IF there was some substance. For example there are couple of really big issues that could have been tackled but are glossed over. The most obvious being the authors passing references to the wives / partners he was unfaithful to and the six children that he let down in the most cruel way. A real discussion about how he deals with the guilt this must have left him with (if he really is transformed in the way he says he is) would have been valuable. As it is, this is all brushed over and leaves with the sense the author is far from genuine. Similarly, he could have talked more about the 'challenge to his sexuality' during his relationship with 'View' the Thai ladyboy. It seems from the authors Facebook pages that he is now pretty hard up and living in something close to poverty. The overall sense I got from the book is the real story is 'the chickens have come home to roost' (treat your 'loved ones badly, lead a selfish and self-centered live, ruin your business relationships and you end up with nothing) rather then the story of self discovery etc etc the author claims it to be. Sorry but it's a wast of (admittedly not much) money.

"Certification Book of the Week: 'RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Study Guide'
While its primary purpose is to serve as a study guide, the book doubles equally well as a reference ... All in all, it is a great book and one that anyone working with RHEL 6 will want to have. "

Emmett Dulaney, Associate Professor, in a review at CertCities.com

RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide, 6th Ed is "also a very useful book if you simply need to learn more about administering Red Hat Linux systems in your workplace...I like the conciseness of this book."

From the Author
When I saw the changes that Red Hat announced in November of 2010, I knew that I'd have to make serious revisions for the 6th edition. When Red Hat revised those objectives again a month later, I restarted the revision process to make sure I included complete coverage of every objective.

To address the new RHCSA certification, the changes to the RHCE objectives, as well as the new features included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL 6), I've rewritten and added hundreds of pages of new material. I actually had to delete a couple of hundred pages of now unrelated material from the fifth edition to make room.

Every command in this book has been tested on a RHEL 6 system. Much of this book has also been tested on the freely available Scientific Linux 6, built from RHEL 6 source code. (You don't have to buy RHEL 6 to prepare for the Red Hat exams.) While the best way to prepare for the RHCSA and RHCE exams is with Red Hat's prep courses, I hope you'll find this book to be invaluable in your studies and on the job.

The book describes how you can satisfy the latest objectives for both the RHCSA and RHCE exams. At over 1000 pages, it includes detailed descriptions on how to configure real-world systems based on those objectives. Due to the hands-on nature of the exam, the book includes 109 labs. (That's nearly double the number of labs in the fifth edition.)

Red Hat's director of certification has stated that exam tasks will be "presented electronically". To reflect this change, most lab questions and all four sample exams are available only on the CD, in the subdirectories for each chapter. (All labs in Chapter 1 and one lab in Chapter 2 are still shown in the printed book.)

When I used the fifth edition to teach a Linux course, I realized how important it is to have separate chapters for the RHCSA and the RHCE. It took a bit of extra time, but I hope you agree that it's worth it. If you want to study for the RHCSA first, focus on Chapters 1 through 9. To study for the RHCE, read Chapters 10 through 17. Every chapter includes at least 12 fill-in-the-blank review questions to help you confirm mastery of this material. In addition, Chapters 1 and 2 include instructions on how to use Red Hat's KVM software to create the virtual machines to set up test scenarios for both exams.

As suggested by the RHCSA and RHCE objectives, the "performance-based testing means that candidates must perform tasks similar to what they must perform on the job". Security, especially SELinux, is more important than ever. This book describes the RHCSA-level tools needed to configure KVM, to automate installations, to customize how a system boots, to set up different filesystems, to administer users, to update packages, and more. Of course, it also addresses the RHCE skills associated with servers for e-mail, web sites, Samba, NFS, FTP, NTP, and Logging. For both exams, you'll learn to configure firewalls and SELinux in all the detail that you'll need.

Thank you, and good luck!

Excellent Study Guide and Reference Manual
By Matt Morgan
This is the sixth edition of Jang's Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide, though it has in previous editions been known under slightly different titles due to the change in Red Hat's test titles. With the transition to Red Hat Enterprise 6 and the introduction of Red Hat's RHCSA (Certified System Administrator) test, this book has undergone a significant revision cycle.

First things first - the book comes with a CD that contains a total of four practice exams, two for the RHCSA exam and two for the RHCE exam. It also contains a full copy of the book, in PDF form, broken up in chapters. This is a huge benefit for those that travel with a laptop or for those that wish to study without toting the book along. This CD alone is worth the cost of the book.

Startling to those familiar with previous editions of this book is the edition of coverage of the KVM early into the book (chapter 2). According to Jang, the exam now is conducted through virtualization and as such one must have some familiarity with the environment before taking the test. Being relatively new to virtual operating system environments, this is very helpful material and is applicable to things that happen in the workplace when looking for ways to make the most of the hardware available.

As in previous editions this books has a breakdown of what chapters cover each exam, and this table is covered early. For people studying for the RHCSA exam, this makes it a little easier to narrow down the scope of material. There are 17 chapters of study materials in this book, plus the practice exams: Preparing for the RH Hands-On Certification, Virtual Machines and Automates Installations, Fundamental Command Line Skills, RHCSA-Level Security Options, The Boot Process, Linux Filesystem Administration, Package Management, User Administration, RHCSA-Level System Administration Tasks, A Security Primer, System Services and SELinux, RHCE Administrative Tasks, Electronic Mail Servers, The Apache Web Server, The Samba File Server, More File-Sharing Services, and finally Administrative Services: DNS, FTP, and Logging. Each of these chapters dives deep into the topic matter and offers up self-quiz questions and exercises to help learn and/or master the material. With this coverage passing the exams are within reach.

This is not just an exam preparation manual, though. It is also a superb reference. It is not feasible to remember everything there is to know about Linux and Red Hat in particular, but this book keeps everything close by and accessible - and the PDF version is invaluable just for the searching capabilities alone.

I keep this book close by. Previous versions of this book have helped many people pass the RHCE and the RHCT (superceded by the new RHSCA) exams, and this books is suited for doing the same for many more people. Even if you're not prepping for certification, consider picking up this book as it will be a very valuable reference. By the way - after working with this book almost to the exclusion of other references, I passed the RHCSA on the first try. I have not yet pursued the RHCE but it's on the horizon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It should be noted that this book does NOT cover configuration of the X Window system. According to Red Hat's published exam objectives for RHEL 6 (as of summer 2011), X configuration is not required for passing the RHCSA or RHCE exams and as such this book does not include X coverage.

Above expecations
By Lethe
I'm a full time Linux Systems Engineer/Trainer who holds RHCE himself, I've been a big fan of the previous book which was my main tool of preparation (together with experience and other subject specific books) and was eagerly looking forward the updated version for RHEL 6.

Usually when a new product come out the associated book is more a copy/modify/paste of the previous version in this case Michael Jang has done a tremendous job of updating all the content from the previous version while adding new stuff that lot of people were looking for like how to build your own lab, basic configuration for the lab and lot of scenarios for practice.

In the past I've been writing my own scripts/labs and releasing them on my blog but when I took the book in my hand was surprised in a pleasant way! Jang made it again raising the bar of excellence for how a technical book should be written!

If you are preparing for RHCSA/RHCE don't wait anymore this is the one stop for your certification needs.

Good for a newbie - despite what some reviewers say
By Ken Aldrich
I'm a linux Newbie. I've never installed or configured it. I looked at the available books on the subject and chose this one. Even though this book is targeted towards those trying to achieve certifications, I find the practical approach to the book useful.
I like the book because he takes you through, step by step, how to set up machines and perform tasks. There are special margin notes on what things you might focus on if you're taking the exam, and what things you might focus on if you're trying to learn this for a job.

I read some of the negative reviews before purchasing. After having read through the first two chapters and completing the labs, I have these several things to say:
1) If you were confused about what resources you needed to allocate to the VMs, then you did not pay close enough attention. There is no confusion about how many GBs you should allocate to the Host VM you're setting up and the VMs inside. I did view the errata documents the author posted on the publisher's website. I did not find any of the information there "critical" to understanding the book. I'd have gotten by just fine without having to review that PDF document that illustrates the relationships of the VMs. I'd have gotten by without having to review the textual corrections.
2) I have had no confusion about which IPs to assign to which machines. Although, I will admit, due to the effects of an intermittently faulty old switch I was using for my testlab, I did have some confusion on one point. Just know this about the KVM virtual machines and networking. When you set up the virtual network of 192.168.221.x inside the VM host, it is an entirely separate virtualized network. You do not need to have an external router handling gateway, DNS, DHCP, etc for the 192.168.221.x network. For example, the NIC on my physical machine (the KVM host) had an IP of 10.10.10.160 which allowed me to have it on my own home network. However, for VMs inside, it would access my KVM host at 192.168.221.1 because it was also the gateway for the virtual network. I didn't need to have multiple NICs on my physical machine. It was all handled virtually. It all just works like you'd want it to work. To some, this may be obvious. However, I was questioning it because it wasn't working due to squirrely hardware.
3) When reading through the chapters you will encounter Exercises. At first I was under the impression that I should be following along and performing these exercises in my test environment. I since learned that you should hold off until you reach the end of the chapter to do the labs. I recommend reading through the exercises and absorbing the material, but you will get plenty of chance to perform those tasks when you do the labs. What is important is the labs will give you some more specific instructions that you do not encounter during the Exercises. These specific instructions are important for setting up the machines in a way that will be important in later chapters. When you do the labs, you'll basically page back in the book and follow along the exercises, performing those operations on your machines.
4) Some of the reviews expressed frustration over how much the author "skips around". I can sort of see where that is coming from. Take this quote from Chapter 2 in the book, "...you can also connect the local system to the installation source created in Chapter 1, Lab 2 using the techniques described in Chapter 7." For some, that can be a source of logical frustration. What happened is that while you were doing something in Chapter 1 of the book, the author referenced techniques in Chapter 7... something you haven't even read yet. Not only that, now we're in Chapter 2 and he's referencing something in Chapter 1 that referenced something in Chapter 7. Believe it or not, this is not an uncommon occurrence in the book. I think this frustrates some readers. I am here to say that you don't have to let it bother you, just ignore it. So far, not ONCE have I had to go forward to a later chapter to understand the content. Actually, the author is being very helpful here. The "forward reference" to a chapter later in the book, so far for me, has always been an Optional reference that provides more detail about a subject. You don't need to know that "more detail" to accomplish the current task. Those "forward references" are likely more useful for more advanced users that want to delve deeper into a topic the first time it is broached. Newbies, like me, can just ignore for now. So while it can seem to read like the author is skipping all over the darn place... you don't have to. I'm just reading and going forward in line. The content builds on itself in a very logical and helpful way. The only "skipping" I do is when I get to the labs after I've read the chapter, is I skip back to the relevant exercises in the chapter so I can see his examples and follow along. I like it because it exposes me to the material twice. The first time I'm just reading through the exercises and it exposes me to the content in a context with the rest of the material. Then I go back and actually DO IT on my test machines to help solidify what I've learned.

I hope this helps some people that read some of the reviews and are reticent to choose this book. I'm a total newbie and in less than a day I've learned to install the server from CD with many packages, update it, set up FTP and HTTP servers, share out the install files for Red Hat, set up Virtual Machine host, create some machines inside of there by using the install files I shared out from the server.... all this while using an automated Kickstart answer file. This is a very hands on approach that lets you DO this stuff at very minimal cost. I bought a cheap Athlon X2, 64-bit computer with 8 gigs of RAM and a 500 Gig hard drive. I'm able to practice networking machines together, testing access to resources through the firewall (from multiple virtual test subnets), etc, etc all on that one investment of $300 of hardware.

This book was the right choice for me.

Author One-on-One: Maria Semple and Tara Conklin

Maria Semple is the bestselling author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

Maria Semple: Tara, huge congratulations on The House Girl. How did this novel come into being?

Tara Conklin: Thanks, Maria. The novel began as a short story that I wrote about six years ago. I came across the term “slave doctor” in a book I was reading and the words made me stop. I became curious as to why a person dedicated to healing would take on such a role. From that initial spark of curiosity, I wrote a short story about a slave doctor, Caleb Harper, and two women appeared in his story. I say “appeared” because that’s really how it seemed to happen – Josephine and Dorothea just showed up and demanded my attention. I couldn’t stop wondering about these two characters and so I started writing separate stories about them, and I just kept writing.

MS: Josephine, a house slave in 1852 Virginia, became one of your narrators. The other, Lina, is a lawyer in present day New York. You practiced law before you became a novelist. Did Lina’s voice come easily by comparison?

TC: No, I actually found Lina’s sections tougher to get right. I think because Lina’s external world is more similar to mine, it was more difficult to imagine her – I kept bumping up against my own experience.

MS: That’s so surprising, that Josephine was the easier voice to get right.

TC: Josephine came to me very organically – I felt that I knew who she was and what she wanted early on in the writing. Her character was inspired by two people: one was an African-American artist named Mary Bell and the other was a former slave, Elizabeth Mumbet Freeman, who lived in my hometown during the 18th century. Mumbet said that if she could have one minute of freedom, only to die afterwards, she would make the trade. That strength of purpose helped me understand Josephine.

MS: While she's not a narrator, the character of Lu Anne Bell looms large over the story. She's quite mysterious and wonderful. I'm curious if she, too, is partly based on a real person.

TC: No, she is entirely fictional, but I’m glad that you thought otherwise! I wrote quite a bit of back story for Lu Anne that never made its way into the novel: her childhood in Mississippi, how she met Mister, why they fell in love. I see Lu Anne as an essentially tragic figure – I think she wants to break out of the world she’s been born into, but she can’t quite transcend it.

MS:You were born in St. Croix and grew up in Stockbridge, MA. Did growing up in these two vastly different environments influence you as a writer?

TC: Both places are steeped in history, so they’ve given me an appreciation for and curiosity about the past and how it helps shape the present. Both places also have substantial ties to slavery. I don’t remember much about St. Croix, but I grew up with my parents’ stories of the island’s racial tension, the horrible legacy of the sugar fields. When I was in elementary school in Stockbridge, I learned about the Underground Railroad and Mumbet (mentioned above), a slave who sued for her freedom in a Massachusetts court and won. These stories really stayed with me over the years.

MS: What are you reading now?

TC: I always have several novels on the go at once – right now I’m reading Zone One by Colson Whitehead, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and I’m re-reading A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley, one of my all-time favorites.

From Booklist
Conklin persuasively intertwines the stories of two women separated by time and circumstances but united by a quest for justice. When law associate Lena Sparrow is handed a plum assignment—to find the perfect poster child for a class-action suit on behalf of the descendants of American slaves—she has little appreciation for how radically the task will change the course of her own life and destiny. As she searches for a descendant of Josephine Bell, a house girl rumored to have been the actual artist of a series of stunning paintings credited to her white mistress, she peels away layers of both Josephine’s past and her own complacency. Retracing Josephine’s often-elusive path, she uncovers some troubling facts about her parents and the startling lie that formed the basis of her childhood and young adulthood. Stretching back and forth across time and geography, this riveting tale is bolstered by some powerful universal truths. --Margaret Flanagan

Too Many Coincidences
By Mary Lins
I'm afraid I'm going to break from the pack here and only give "The House Girl" by Tara Conklin, a two-star review. The novel is comprised of two interwoven narratives, one takes place in modern day concerning Lina, a young attorney who is looking for a plaintiff who is a descendent of a slave to participate in a huge slavery reparations case. The other story is of Josephine, a young slave who disappears from the records in 1852.

Josephine's story revolves around one day, the day she decides to run for freedom. I felt this story dragged and had too many holes in it that Lina would magically come to fill. Josephine's story did have moments of suspense about whether or not she would be caught trying to escape.

Lina's story moves quicker and is full of coincidences that propel her to find out about Josephine. I found myself not liking Lina as a character. I don't need to like a character to like a novel, but Lina annoyed me. Her passivity about her own life irked me; there are secrets that she knows are being kept from her about her mother, but she doesn't press to find out about them. The feasibility of a billion to trillion dollar slavery reparations case is only nominally questioned and then presented as a moral imperative. Only a few of the many legitimate arguments against such as class-action case are presented in a brief discussion and then utterly discounted.

Additionally I found it unbelievable and irritating that Conklin would make it seem that finding a person who could prove they were descendent from slaves with a credible story of harm, to be such a haphazard, needle-in-the-haystack situation. Surely there are millions who could fit that bill.

I concede that as a former lawyer, Tara Conklin has much more legal knowledge than I, but the architecture of the case, and thus the plot of the novel, just didn't ring true to me on any level.

By the time I got to Caleb's story of Josephine at the end I just wanted it all to be tied up, only to find that his narrative dragged and wandered excruciatingly only to then end each of their stories in a rushed and cut short fashion, which was astounding after the rest of the book dragged.

In short, the book just did not grab me; I did not look forward to reading it and I was glad to finish and move on to something else. Obviously other readers had a more positive experience; this review reflects my experience and opinion only.

For a wonderfully engrossing, moving and gut-wrenching story of slavery I recommend Toni Morrison's, "Beloved".

Won Me Over
By Utah Mom
I don't know how many times I've repeated the same conversation with others. It goes, essentially, like this : "It's so hard to pick a book for a book club that everyone can enjoy. An otherwise well written, insightful book is ruined by profanity or unnecessary sexual scenes." It can be frustrating to find really good books. So, when I find one that I can recommend to everyone, I am especially delighted.

The House Girl by Tara Conklin is such a book. Well written with superb attention to detail and a wonderful ability to make scenes come to life, The House Girl tells the stories of two women--Josephina, the artistically talented house slave in Virginia and Lina, the ladder-climbing young attorney in New York City. Their stories become intertwined when Lina starts working on a retribution case for a big client. Looking for the perfect plaintiff, Lina discovers that Josephina may actually be the true artist of the famous works of her owner.

To be honest, the story began slowly and I struggled to stay involved. I must admit that I only had quick moments of time to read lately and The House Girl sat neglected on my night stand for a few weeks. It was only the last few days that I was able to devote the time this book deserved. I spent the last few evenings devouring the story and falling in love with the likable and rich characters.

Part heartrending tales of the abuse of slaves; part a genealogical mystery and part a story of individual healing, The House Girl won me over.

Great detail - very interesting
By Silver's Reviews
From 1852 to 2004....from one artist to another....from a farm in Virginia to the hustle and bustle of New York City.

THE HOUSE GIRL flawlessly switches between these two time periods telling of the life of Josephine, a slave girl, Lina, a New York City attorney, and Lina's father, Oscar, an artist. The book leads you through the life of Josephine as she struggles with her decision to "run, it leads you through the life of Lina who is researching families who may benefit from wrong doing during the period of slavery in the United States, and it leads you through the life of Oscar trying to make amends through his artwork.

The most significant question, though, along with finding descendants is that of who really did create the paintings found in Lu Anne Bell's home? Was it really Lu Anne or was it Josephine? Corresponding with this painting mystery and the mystery of Josephine's descendants is that of Lina's mother...what really did happen to her when Lina was only four?

You will get caught up in both stories because of the great detail Ms. Conklin uses and because of the research. I love "digging" for historical information. As you switch between the two stories, you will ask yourself to choose which life you were more interested in....Lina's or Josephine's....it may be difficult to choose since both were appealing and drew you in, but for me Josephine's story wins hands down for interest.

It took a few chapters, but you will become so involved, it becomes difficult to stop reading....you want to know what will become of the characters and the answer to the mysteries.

Each character comes alive with the vivid detail Ms. Conklin uses, and she puts their feelings out in the open...you can feel the tension, the pain, the frustration, the longing, and the fleeting happiness they experience. I really enjoyed this book because of the history and the research and of course the detailed descriptions of the characters.

The historical aspect and the fact-finding kept me up late. It is very interesting how the farm's kitchen records, crop records, and births and deaths of every person including the slaves was kept. I thoroughly enjoy these types of findings. I also wonder how these records were not destroyed and who would have thought to preserve them. Such foresight....something to be grateful for.

Don't miss this book especially if you are a historical fiction buff. This book pulls you in and will cause you to pause and reflect on the human race and have you wondering about the reasons why we do what we do, have you wondering what the reasons are that lead us to make the choices we make, and have you wondering about the reason we turned out to be the person we are. 5/5

This book was given to me without compensation by the publisher in return for an honest review.

La Theorie Sensorielle: I- Les Analogies Sensorielles (French Edition), by Philippe Roi, Tristan Girard

A most imaginative insight into man's creativity
By Richard Dumbrill
This fascinating work is more a collection of essays than it is a continuous volume. However the descriptions in each archaeological and bio-neurological section are indisputably accurate and written in a clear language with contributions of leading academics. There is no room for circumstantial evidence as the analogies here presented are indubitably justified. They lead to the hypothesis of an underlying non-conscious cognitive process. The authors, Philippe Roi and Tristan Girard, will reveal, in a forthcoming volume, the thesis by which a 'neural code' would elucidate the causes and consequences of the analogies presented in this first tome. The illustrations are excellent and add to the understanding of the given analogies. There is no doubt that this publication will lead to fierce opposition, as it is the case with every significant contribution to the corpus of neural-scientific research, and will help strengthen the thesis.

Original, Exciting Scholarship
By nick turner
This is a fascinating and I think ground-breaking book, whose argument is backed up with excellent illustrations. It enhances our understanding of how the senses function, and how the development of various instruments has been inspired by them. It is clear, readable and intellectually stimulating. A great book.

Animals and Modern Cultures: A Sociology of Human-Animal Relations in Modernity, by Adrian Franklin

The dramatic transformation of relationships between humans and animals in the 20th century are investigated in this fascinating and accessible book. At the beginning of this century these relationships were dominated by human needs and interests, modernization was a project which was attached to the goal of progress and animals were merely resources to be used on the path towards human fulfilment. As the century comes to an end these relationships are increasingly being subjected to criticism. We are now urged to be more sensitive and compassionate to animal needs and interests.

This book focuses on social change and animals, it is concerned with how humans relate to animals and how this has changed and why. Moreover, it highlights

Excellent, Thoughtful Overview of Human-Animal Interface in Industrial Societies
By Amazonia
I'm astonished by both the depth and the breadth of this sophisticated examination of a range of human-animal relationships in modern Western society. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have read it and intend to use it in a college course I am developing. I find it especially helpfully in providing an overview of broad topics, such as the historical shift from small family farms to massive agribusinesses, a shift that has produced a factory farming system that is truly, egregiously inhumane to so-called "food animals" such as cows and pigs. The beauty of the chapter is that it discusses a variety of such animals, so the breadth is really much appreciated by those of us who need a sort of thumnail of the shape of modern agribusiness. At the same time that he provides a useful overview of historically situated and changing relationships, Franklin also makes some theoretical contributions to this now-burgeoning, multidisciplinary field. For example, in his chapter on pets, he argues that in the modern capitalist context, pets address our pervasive, if under-discussed, sense of "ontological insecurity." We've lost the kin networks and communities of yesteryear and cats and dogs help to fill in the social (and perhaps existential?) gaps that yawn before us in modern life. There are now so many scholarly books about the human-animal interface out there these days, but Franklin was way ahead of his time with this accessible and thoughtful 1999 publication. As to the cost, about which the previous reviewer complained: yes, it's a real bummer, what academic books cost these days. But let us give credit where it is due, especially to hard-working scholars who are not making money on such under-appreciated publications.
