Even though I have never taken a sensory course before, this book allows me a greater understanding of the information without bogging me down with complicated terms and lofty prose. The book also has great example throughout. And with the great price, who wouldn't buy it here? I told my classmates about it, and they are getting it here as well. Thanks!

Awesome Sensory Book!

I have collected a variety of Sensory materials (articles, manuals, books, etc.) through the years, and I hadn't found a book more complete and updated than this one. It has extremely useful tips for Sensory leaders, from building a Sensory Lab to Multivariate Statistical techniques you can apply. As Sensory Analyst, I highly recommend this book either for students or professionals.

One of the best sensory text books

This is one of the best sensory text books I've used through college and into my career. The value of this text is that it explains industry based sensory evaluations and provides sensory sheets and data pages that can be used for sensory projects. It may be missing some information on sensory theory, but its value is in how it can be applied to a practical setting.

Chase Jackson is my hero!

This was an excellent book to read. Knowing it was geared towards young adults and knowing I'm in my upper 30s I was nervous it might not capture my attention. Not only did it capture my attention but I read it fast...then moved on to the next one quickly and finished that one too. I fell in love with the characters. If you are in high school or have ever been in high school you can TOTALLY relate with the main character Chase Jackson and the struggles he has to find himself and fit into the high school scene. You can't help but fall in love with him and his friends. I found myself carving out 10 minutes here and there in my day to read because it was addicting!
My only critique (while still giving it 5 starts, mind you) is some editing misses but I am sure they will get worked out with the next edition.
And honestly, I'm kind of bummed that there's only 1 more book in the series. Wish it would just keep going. Good work Mr. Janney! Well done on this series. I love to ready but really struggle to find time and in the span of about a month I've read the Outlaw and Infected. It takes a special kind of writing style and content to hold my attention like that!!!

Acceptable but not great - Surprised at all the 5 star reviews.

Hmm... Okay. I know I'll be going against the majority of reviews here, but this book was merely acceptable. When I saw that Outlaw had four and a half stars, I expected a real page turner, with snappy dialogue, great character development, and a good super powers/magic system. Instead, Origins is a run of the mill YA adventure suited more for the older teen crowd than full adults. The plot goes something like: Formerly nerdy boy gets powers. Boy begins to play sports. Girls start to like him. There's a bully. He has problems at home. He becomes a hero.

There is precious little that's original.

The writing, while acceptable, isn't exceptional. There are repetitive moments in the book - like the many detailed play by play football games that are described. There is some decent character development at times, like with Hannah, one of the MC's love interests, but many of the other characters are flat, almost caricatures. Also, there are a few somewhat odd... almost promotional plugs in the book that are discordant. For instance, neither the main character or any other major character is portrayed as all that religious, but, about halfway through the book, the MC goes to a church and discovers that his assistant coach is a deacon there. Pretty much immediately the assistant coach writes the MC a check, from the church, to help out with the MC's money problems at home. The MC then says/thinks, "Before I got into my car, I glanced at the check. It was for two thousand dollars. I drove home with shaking hands, crying, praying, and laughing." Little PSA type things like this were a bit discordant for me.

So, I'll stick to my guns. I have no idea why so many people have rated this book so highly. It isn't horrible, but it also isn't great. Origins is just a run of the mill, quasi-religious, young adult super hero story.

and I thought my high school years were messed up

I guess the gentrification of downtown Los Angeles didn't stick. Alan Janney's The Outlaw: Origins paints 2017 as a bleak year for us Californios, what with racial unrest triggered by a controversial law just passed in California that makes life much harder for illegal immigrants, what with lawlessness rampant in the 'hood, what with a masked crimefighter roaming the streets, serving up a mean brand of justice. What we readers know - and what the characters in the book don't - is that the vigilante is actually a 17-year-old kid named Chase Jackson, him what juggles multiple life styles. In Glendale's Hidden Spring High, Chase is the backup quarterback, a nobody who tried out and shocked everyone by making it to the team. Chase attends one of the more posh schools in the state, never mind that he's its most broke seeker of knowledge. His shabby, old-ass Toyota cowers in shame next to the gleaming SUVs of the wealthy students. You instantly root for the kid.

4 out of 5 stars for The Outlaw: Origins, a ripper of a read even with its flaws. Alan Janney neatly folds in high school drama and football with urban superheroics. Chase is a protagonist that's easy to like. He's not perfect. He doesn't always say the right things. He's barely treading water with his complicated relationship issues. Yep, the boy is just clueless enough to make him interesting. Chase is in love with his childhood best friend, Katie. But he's flirting with the head cheerleader who he suspects is using him purely for status, seeing as how he's killing it lately on the football field. And I won't even go on about the starlet that he ends up rescuing from a mugging...

Chase's barrelful of angst is offset by the occasional action sequence. Except that the origin of Chase's superpower isn't addressed or even that much delved into. There's an element of Jekyll & Hyde and, more often than not, bouts of disorientation and excruciating pain. Some ambiguity lifts when Chase does refer to his condition as a disease (Loc 640), although that's probably more the writer's slip of the tongue. The 411 behind Chase's origin drops in the sequel (Infected: Die Like Supernovas).

Chase finds himself a celebrity on two fronts. On the gridiron, he's now being evaluated by the media and the scouts. Meanwhile, his alter ego's exploits are also gaining him massive press. The football sequences are as riveting as the vigilante smack-downs. Janney really knows how to tell these come-from-behind rallies in exciting fashion. On the crimefighting side, Chase does eventually end up with his own nemesis, and the interesting thing is that it's a villain that crosses over from one section of Chase's life into another.

I had a concern that the writer introduced that whiff of social commentary only to not do crap about it, but that was before I started reading the sequel. For now, the protests and riots staged by the Latino community serve merely as backdrop, an accentuating element. I wished, though, that Katie had more of an opinion about what's going on since she is half-Puerto Rican and all. What's kind of killing me is that Chase is so oblivious when it comes to relationships. C'mon, no one's that oblivious. Anyway, this is a read I couldn't put down, never mind that Chase's romantic complications get a bit too nutty and that, sometimes, the dialogue doesn't come off natural. Above all else, Janney is a riveting storyteller. He took me back to my high school days when I was pretty much like Chase: dumb, confused, feeling alone. Except I couldn't leap tall buildings in a single bound.

About the Author
Diane Diekman is the author of Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins;Navy Greenshirt: A Leader Made, Not Born; and A Farm in the Hidewood: My South Dakota Home. A retired U.S. Navy captain, she was acquainted with Faron Young for 26 years before his death in 1996.

One Of The Best Biographies Ever!!! WOW!

This is one of the best biographies I have ever read about anyone. This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!

The Beauty of Truth

What appeals to me as a reader -- and what I admire about Diane as a writer and biographer -- is that Faron is revealed as a "man in full." Faron possessed a magical voice, a gift for entertaining, an appreciation for his artistic abilities, but he apparently was also possessed by the demons of depression.

Years of research, and a compassionate understanding of the man behind the music, gives readers (and history) a book wherein Diane examines Faron's life and death, never hiding sad truths that sometimes leave a reader reeling, but yet we know she loved and respected the man and his art.

A Man of Contradictions

Faron Young, who is today one of the more underestimated country singers of his generation despite his long career and many hit records, was a hard man for even his friends to peg. That is because, as so aptly described by Diane Diekman in her Faron Young biography, "Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story," he was a man of strong contradictions.

Faron Young was one of the nicest men in the world but he was one very mean drunk and no one wanted to be around him when he was drinking heavily (and that was much of the time). He was extremely generous to those who had less then him (often they were songwriters on the way up, such as Willie Nelson) and were in need of a few hundred dollars to tide them over, but was known to refuse his road band the extra five dollars a day that would have made all the difference in the world to them. He loved his children and considered himself to be a good family man but he made it a point to speak of his youngest daughter as his "only little girl" and never publicly acknowledged the other daughter he had out of wedlock or how terrible his relationship with his oldest sons really was. Faron could curse like a sailor, and he usually did, but would behave respectably around the wives of his band members. He had lots of longtime friends and he had lots of longtime enemies. He was an astute businessman who made some terrible business decisions that cost him a whole lot of money.

All of these contradictions, taken as a whole, are probably why so many people explained their toleration for Young's behavior by saying, "That's just Faron." Connie Smith used those words to explain how someone with her temperament could endure working on the road with the fast-living Faron Young. And even Jean Shepard, as brash as she sometimes appears to be, finally refused to go on the road with him any longer.

Longtime Faron Young fans who witnessed him in his prime will probably still find some surprises in, or have their memories nudged by, Diane Diekman's well-researched and detailed biography. She reminds us that Faron was founder of the influential Music City News and reveals just how much personal money he put into the newspaper in order to keep it afloat long enough for it to pay its own way. Her readers also learn that he would have had more hit records, and number ones, if he had not refused to let his label use payola to move his records up the charts the way record labels bought higher chart positions for so many other singers.

And that is just the beginning of what is packed into "Live Fast, Love Hard." The book covers the childhood that may explain Faron's own cold approach to fatherhood, the national, though bogus, scandals that damaged his career, his failed marriage, and his tragic death at his own hand. About the only thing missing is a comprehensive discography of Faron's recordings, although the book does mention most, if not all, of his record albums and notes which ones include his biggest hits.

So this is a book both for those who are already fans of Faron Young's great voice and for those to whom he is hardly more than a name from country music's past. Put a copy of "Wine Me Up" on the turntable, grab a cold one, prop your boots up on the foot stool, and enjoy this book. If you're not already a Faron Young fan, you probably will be by the time you finish "Live Fast, Love Hard."

Before he became George W. Bush's running mate in the 2000 election, Hayes reports, Dick Cheney called the vice presidency a cruddy job. But during his tenure, Hayes argues, Cheney transformed this traditionally inconsequential office into a focal point of presidential power. While emphasizing Cheney's role as vice president, this biography follows his entire political career, beginning with a 1968 congressional fellowship and including key positions in the Ford and George H.W. Bush administrations, as well as 21 years as a congressman. Drawing on interviews with Cheney and others, as well as TV interviews and other journalistic reports, Hayes covers this material engagingly and efficiently. Beware of political opposition masquerading as a review

Stephen F. Hayes's new biography of Vice President Cheney is narrative history at its best. Decidedly not an authorized biography, the book is unsparing in its account of Cheney's development from an "analytical" political scientist, primarily interested in political methods, into the most powerful American conservative since President Reagan. Hayes shows how Cheney's experience in the Nixon and Ford administrations encouraged his development from a "moderate" without ideological moorings into a principled conservative whose skepticism of governmental solutions to human problems is founded upon firsthand knowledge of governmental failures.

Hayes is interested in neither gossip nor dirt. If you want that, you'll have to find a different book. Nor is it accurate to say that Hayes offers little new information. I had not known, for example, that Cheney went from being a Yale dropout and electrical-company lineman (with two drunk driving arrests) to White House insider in just a decade. If a man capable of such improbable progress fascinates you; if you do not want your preconceptions confirmed, either for or against the man; if you are curious how the "most powerful and controversial vice president" in American history came to assume that title; if you are convinced that a man ought to be judged by how he explains himself rather than by conspiracy theories; if you want to learn about the Vice President's moral and intellectual development and if you believe that it is possible, even for your political opponents, to act from moral and intellectual principle; then this is the book for you.

Hayes is a political journalist, and writes like one. As a consequence, the book is not without its faults. It is more of an "oral" biography, depending largely upon interviews, than a "literary" one, depending upon documents. Similarly, it is not scholarly biography, which might supply more background information on events, movements, and the lesser figures in Cheney's life. Because the focus is exclusively on Cheney, things get dropped without explanation. Hayes discusses Cheney's disagreement with Henry Kissinger over whether President Ford should meet with Alexander Solzhenitsyn, for example, but never reports the outcome. (Ford declined to meet with him.) These are small flaws, though, especially given the book's informativeness and easy readability. Overall, this is a superb look into the inner political machinery of the Republican Party over the past three decades, which should appeal to fair-minded opponents and supporters of Vice President Cheney alike.

I was one of those people who hated GWB and Dick Cheney. I thought they both came from the devil and had nothing and did nothing for this country except cause misery and harm. But after the Current President was elected I decided to research these two men myself starting with this book. I don't care what people say but this book is not biased in any way. It gives you a real look at a man people don't know much about nor do they care too, they just want to keep hating and hating him and too me that's quite unfair. Im not even half way through with this book but I find it fascinating and enlightening. Dick Cheney is not Satan nor Darth Vader or whatever it is people want to call him. He started out just like any American, and with alot of hard work and a bit of luck he is what he is today. Sure I disagree with some of the things like the war in Iraq but like I said don't judge a book by it's cover. To those who want to get off their butts and really research this man I recommend you start here at this book and I hope in the end you can look at him in perhaps a different way.

Biased but still useful view of Dick Cheney

Stephen Hayes writes a biography of Cheney from the view of the right with the most access to the vice president than anyother reporter has ever had. With that being said Cheney is still a very private man who shares little about his life. Hayes is very thorough and provides an excellent look at how Cheney got to where he was from Yale dropout to rising academic that chooses to go into public service in the Ford administration as a chief of staff working with Donald Rumsfeld. After going into elected office and serving as Secretary of Defense Cheney retired from public life to become a board member at Halliburton. What would become one of the most controversial parts of the Bush administration when the government would award no bid contracts to the company.

As with any political book bias is a huge concern. When it comes to Cheney's early years much of what is written matches up with other biographies on Reagan and Ford and really paints a picture of how those offices worked. His recounting of the 9/11 events also is in line with those reports by George Tennet, Richard Clarke and others. When it comes to the war in Iraq there is a lot of dancing around and I found this to be the least helpful part of the book since it seemed to contradict what others had written. Now the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle and I doubt we will ever know if this administration came in with the intent to go to war in Iraq. One thing this book makes very clear is the Bush cabinet was a product of Dick Cheney. He surrounded Bush with close friends like Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice and Powell.

As to the charge of Cheney being the puppet master it is hard to get a sense. Cheney was selected as VP because he had the experience in government that George Bush did not and he would use that experience to be an effective administrator. Given Cheney's already reluctant and private nature it created the appearance of a more sinister front than seems to be presented here. Overall it is a very interesting look at Cheney's life and worth the time to read.
